the challenge that inspired the invention of basketball came from dr. luther halsey gulick, jr., the superintendent of physical education at the international ymca training school. during the summer session of 1891, gulick introduced a new course in the psychology of play, and naismith was one of his students. in class discussions, gulick brought up an issue that was weighing on his mind: the need for new indoor game "that would be interesting, easy to learn, and easy to play in the winter and by artificial light."
though the class didn't follow up on gulick's challenge to invent such a game, naismith found himself revisiting the issue a few months later when the physical education faculty met to discuss what was becoming a persistent problem. with the end of the fall sports season, the school once again confronted the distaste many students felt for the gymnasium work that was mandatory during the winter months. one class was particularly incorrigible, and two instructors had already tried and failed to devise activities that would interest them.

母亲的家乡在钟祥，那么钟祥也算是我的另一个家乡了。
按照钟祥的叫法，春节，叫过大年，而元宵，则叫做过小年。
要说过年的氛围，城区也许感觉不到什么，要想真正体验，还得去乡村田野间看看，领略保存下来的年的原汁原味。
相对于城里，这儿过年似乎着急一些：刚进入腊月，便能隔三差五地听见杀猪声。杀猪的是乡亲们用少许的烟和钱请来的，他们通常以此为生，乡亲们叫他们“杀猪佬”。“杀猪佬”一般由三至四人组成，自带工具和一个大桶。一到腊月，便挨家挨户地帮人杀猪。
到了腊月二十，要过年的气氛就更浓了。虽然是一年最冷的时候，可不久便是春天，所以人们并不因为寒冷而减少过年与迎春的热情。
进入腊月二十以后，人们便紧锣密鼓地开始准备年货。吃的方面当然是最重要的。春节必备菜，如蟠龙菜、鱼、蒸肉、香肠等都是必不可少的;当然还有瓜果：脐橙、苹果、芦柑……更是数不胜数;值得一提的，是钟祥的传统点心：交切(芝麻糖)、酥糖、金麻果……到了年三十儿，亲朋好友聚在一起，主人拿出这些，直看得小孩口水流!
从腊月二十起，街上的货摊子就多了——卖年画的、卖祭祀用品的等等都只会在这时出来。
到了腊月二十五、六，炒花生、炒蚕豆的时候到了。是需要用干燥的河沙炒的，但二十七到二十九是忌做这些的，民间有“七不炒，八不闹，九号炒了惹强盗”的说法。
二十七、二十八是做包子、蟠龙菜的时候。所谓包子也不是普通意义上的包子，是没有馅儿的，说白了就是“包子的外形，馒头的内心”。而蟠龙菜的工艺太过复杂，现在人们基本买现成的了。
到了二十九，家里的长辈便不再准备，等着在外拼搏的孩子们回到家的港湾。
年三十儿，大人们会去先辈的坟上烧几柱香，放几挂鞭，称上坟，以表达对先辈的怀念。外婆也常跟我和弟弟说，这是在请祖宗们过年。但现在为了低碳环保，放鞭炮的也就少了些。
到了下午，准备年夜饭时，是一片温馨祥和。妇女们在厨房准备饕餮盛宴，而男人们则张罗着贴春联，小孩们则坐在沙发上，对着取暖器，吃着、喝着、笑着、闹着。好一片其乐融融!
红烛和香点燃了!当家的烧着纸钱，口中念念有词。等放了鞭炮，便可开始大饱口福。这一夜，除了很小的孩子，没什么人睡觉，都要守岁。
正月初一开始拜年。钟祥有“初一拜父母，初二走丈母”之说。初三之后，则根据亲戚的远近，依次拜年。当然，这是小孩们兴的时候，因为他们的红包是大人们免不了的。
元宵，是钟祥人民的小年，这是新年的又一个高潮。这天会有许多烟花盛宴，并有观花灯、猜灯谜、舞龙等节目。街上人们摩肩接踵，往日再冷清的街道也是车水马龙。人们无不沉浸在节日的喜悦之中。
一眨眼，到了残灯末庙，学生陆陆续续地返校，大人们又照常做事。“一年之计在于春”，喜庆的新年和春姑娘携手。新的一年，在火红的“福”中，在碧根的嫩芽里，美丽地绽放……
